Snow and shine and Twenty Nine....

Joe and Emily took the new Giant Anthem 29er out this Sunday to tackle the Borrowdale Bash.....And what a blast it was!

Joe takes up the tale :

Setting off down the M6 with The Stereophonics blasting out from the car stereo, i spotted snow on the northern fells over Caldbeck way, this might be fun i thought to myself!
Parking up at the old railway station we assembled the bikes and stuffed flapjack into the Camlebacks ready for the off. The first thing you notice about the 29er is how big the wheels are when it is stood next to a conventional 26inch MTB.

Heading off down the lake road towards the climb up to Watendlath the first thing you notice about the bike is how well it rolls on the tarmac with very little effort required to keep it rolling along.

Anthem 29er and a surprise view!

Testing the 29ers DH capability!

Arriving at Watentlath we set about testing the bikes off road climbing ability by spinning it up the pass.  This bike tackles technical climbs with ease, the combination of big wheels and the proven Maestro suspension platform makes for plenty of traction and Emily was surprised how much of the pass was ridable for a novice rider. (this was only her second Lake District ride).  After we reached the top of the climb the weather set in unleashing a flurry of snow so we quickly descended down to the road and set off to tackle Honister pass, glad i brought the single speed!

The Giant after negotiating Castle Crag

The real test of this bike came when we reached the descent down Castle Crag(after the hailstorm!).  What can i say! the bike handled it with ease, the big wheels ironing out the rocky descent and instilling confidence in the rider(me!)

We arrived back at the car very impressed with the bike.  Emily commented on how much more confident she felt both climbing and descending on the bigger wheels and i felt that the bike offers one of the best and most comfortable rides of any full suspension bike i have ridden (and i've ridden many in my time!).
But don't take my word for it, come down and try it for yourselves, it is a demo bike after all and i think anyone trying out 29ers for the first time will be sold instantly on the concept!
